The Pomona-Pitzer
women’s lacrosse team (7-3, 4-1 SCIAC) ended their trip to Colorado on a high note with
a 15-11 victory over Colorado College March 22. The win followed two close losses to Wesleyan University and Skidmore College on the Spring Break trip, 12-11 and 11-10 respectively.
The Sagehens gave
up their lead late in the game against Wesleyan March 19. With
spectacular performances by many players, including a five goal effort by attacker Hannah Christenson PO ’17, P-P pulled ahead with a 10-8
lead. However, with less than one minute left in regulation, Wesleyan scored two
goals to take the game to overtime. After trading a goal apiece in overtime,
the Sagehens fell 12-11 in the sudden death OT period.
The game against
Skidmore was also a nail-biter. After four quarters of trading goals, Skidmore managed to get the last say in a 11-10 victory
against Pomona-Pitzer. Attacker Sarah Markowitz PZ ’16 scored five goals, leading the Hens to a 10-10 tie in the final minutes. Skidmore managed to score the final
tally with exactly one minute remaining, and despite the best effort by the
Sagehens, they were not able to make up the difference.
Finally, despite
strong efforts from Colorado College, the Sagehens were able to hang onto their
lead throughout the game to take a 15-11 victory. Christenson scored a
career-high six goals, with more contributions from attacker Rebecca Long PO ’17 and midfielder Sallie Marx PO ’18. The team also had a strong transition game, with only seven turnovers compared to 19 by Colorado.
“Colorado went well,” Long said. “We fought hard in each of our games and we were especially happy with our game against Colorado. We came out strong and kept up the pace for the whole game.”
Back at home on
Wednesday night, Pomona-Pitzer allowed just five goals against the State University of New York College at Buffalo in
a narrow 6-5 victory. The defensive unit comprised of senior defenders Brenna Gormally PO ’15,
Alexa Sarussi PO ’15 and Annie Schatz PZ ’15, as well as junior defender Makayla DeJong
PO ’16, were essential in stopping the majority of Buffalo State’s scoring attempts.
“Our defense had a fantastic game and [goalkeeper] Gaby Fukumura [PO ’17] was amazing in goal,” Long said. “It was a great team win and we are excited to get back into SCIACs.”
The Sagehens look to extend their win streak April 4 when they travel to face Whittier College for the second half of SCIAC play.
