Both Sagehen men and women tennis players competed in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Small College Regional Championships last weekend, held at Pomona-Pitzer’s Pauley Athletic Complex and CMS’s Bisantz Tennis Center. The championship, comprised of players in the West Region, is the only tennis event in the fall and is structured as an individual tournament with a compass draw. Each team entered ten singles players and five doubles teams in the tournament.
On the men’s side, Tommy Meyer PO ’12 reached the quarterfinals, winning three singles matches. Chris Wiechert PZ ’14, Max Sabel PZ ’13, and Connor Hudson PO ’15 all reached the round of 16. Doubles pair Sabel and Uday Singh PO ’12 reached the quarterfinals before falling to UC Santa Cruz’s top team.
Looking ahead to the spring season, the men’s team, currently ranked eighth, will return most of last year’s starting lineup and welcomes five freshmen. Additionally, Frankie Allinson PO ’13 will return in time for the season after spending this semester abroad in Spain.
On the women’s side, Kristin Brikmanis PO ’14, Samantha Chao PO ’14, Marissa Cohen PO ’15, Jessica Hsu PO ’13, and Arthi Padmanabhan PO ’14 reached the round of 16 in singles. Doubles partners Nicole Holsted PO ’12 and Emily Kawahara PZ ’12, as well as Chao and Padmanabhan, reached the semifinals in double. each falling to CMS opponents.
Women’s tennis did not graduate any seniors last year, and welcomes two talented freshmen to the team. Top singles player Jamie Solomon PZ ’13 will return after her semester abroad in China, and two-time All-American doubles team Solomon and Kara Wang PO ’13 look forward to continuing their success this season.
