Softball Falls in Doubleheader to CMS

The Pomona-Pitzer softball team dropped both games of their doubleheader at CMS March 30, losing the first game of the series by a score of 6-5 and the second 6-1. The games were a make-up of the rained-out series originally scheduled for March 17.

The Sagehens were on top in game one until the final inning. In the third inning, Emily Glass PO ’15 hit an RBI triple and Bri Marcantoni’s PZ ’12 ripped a line drive single, providing the Sagehens with a 4-1 lead, their biggest of the game. They held a 5-4 advantage going into the bottom half of the seventh inning, but Rebecca King CM ’12 won the game for the Athenas with a two-run, walk-off homer.

Perhaps demoralized by the defeat in game one, the Sagehens fell flat in game two. Ari Roach PZ ’12 provided the Sagehens’ only offensive production, bringing teammate Jessica Liu PO ’15 in to score. Roach was also the standout in the first game of the doubleheader as she recorded two RBIs on two hits.

With the pair of losses, Pomona-Pitzer concludes the first half of SCIAC play at 8-4. In round two, they will look to improve on what has been their most impressive season in years. They finished 16-23 last season, 12-21 the year before and 6-16 three seasons ago. Now, they stand at 15-11 and are contending for a playoff berth in a league that features two nationally ranked teams. Redlands is ranked 13th in the country, and CMS sits perched at 23rd. Both teams have been strong in conference play: Redlands is 15-1 in the SCIAC, and CMS is 11-3.

The Sagehens will play four away games in two days this weekend. They take on Redlands in a doubleheader today and will play two against Occidental tomorrow. Sagehen fans can look forward to an exciting month of softball as the team seeks to track down Redlands and CMS before SCIAC playoffs at the end of April.
