Claire Brickson PO ’14 ran a speedy 6k in 22:37 at last Saturday’s UC Riverside Invitational meet, earning her a spot as sixth fastest 6k runner in Pomona-Pitzer history. Flying across the finish line, Claire snagged 84th place out of 167 women. Runners from all three NCAA divisions competed, with master’s clubs thrown in here and there.
Following Brickson was Naomi Wagner PO ’13 who clocked in at 22:59. Both women ran clever races, taking the first mile at a good pace and steadily speeding up as the miles wore on. By the time the runners heard cheers of “500 [meters] left,” they were ready to finish with a hard kick.
Riverside hosted two women’s races, and after the 6k another group of women stepped up to run 5k. Sagehens Alana Shine PO ’14 and Ilona Kats PO ’12 hiked up their shorts and ran personal bests. Kats kept a solid pace throughout the race, while Shine emulated her teammates from the earlier race. She increased her speed throughout the course, picking runners off one-by-one and making her way up to Kats. The women sprinted to the finish together, nearly stopping the clock with simultaneous finishes. Shine came in in 19:49.2 with Kats close behind, running 19:49.4.
The Hens will be back in action Oct. 1, when they host the annual Pomona-Pitzer Invitational at 8 a.m.
