Postseason roundup: CMS women’s tennis makes history, track and field athletes win national accolades

Multiple Pomona-Pitzer and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps teams ended their seasons this week, with some athletes and teams earning top spots at nationals.

CMS women’s tennis

CMS women’s tennis (27-2, 7-0 SCIAC) fell short of a second consecutive team NCAA title, losing 5-4 to Wesleyan College (20-2) last week. But the Athenas made history when they sent both of the qualifying teams to the doubles championship match — ensuring a victory for CMS, regardless of which team won.

Catherine Allen SC ’20 and Caroline Cox CM ’21 triumphed over teammates Nicole Tan CM ’20 and Sarah Bahsoun CM ’22 in the first ever CMS vs. CMS final.

The powerhouse duo Cox and Allen lost the first set 6-7, but came back strong in the second and third sets, which they won 6-1 and 6-3, respectively.

“We kind of know each other’s moves,” Allen told TSL earlier this month. The two have developed a strong partnership on the court and a friendship off of it.

In the team competition against Wesleyan, individuals Rebecca Berger CM ’21, Bahsoun and Allen, and a doubles team of Madison Shea CM ’20 and Sydney Lee CM ’22 also won their matches.

Nearly all the team’s members will return next year, placing the Athenas in a strong position to make a run at next year’s national title. Only Jessie Cruz CM ’19 is graduating.

P-P men’s track and field

The Sagehens’ Andy Reischling PO ’19 ended his college career by adding two more All-American honors to his resume. He placed second in the 5,000-meter race, clocking in at 14:43, and seventh in the 10,000-meter race at the NCAA Track and Field Championships in Geneva, Ohio, last weekend.

Danny Rosen PO ’20, who was ranked first in the country coming into the steeplechase, took third place with a time of 9:08, earning him All-American honors.

Carter Floyd PO ’21 and Dante Paszkeicz PO ’22 ran well enough for 14th and 19th places in the preliminary 1,500-meter run, but didn’t qualify for finals.

Pole vaulter Jacque Desmond SC ’20 wrapped up her record-breaking season with All-American honors, placing fourth in her signature event. In April, she became the first woman in SCIAC history to break the 13-foot mark in the pole vault, helping the Athenas win their fifth-straight SCIAC title.

Sabrine Griffith HM ’20 took 15th in the long jump and Amanda Mell CM ’20 took 16th in the triple jump, both missing out on the final round of their events.

P-P women’s track and field

Vicky-Marie Addo-Ashong PO ’20 set a new school record with a distance of 40-feet-5.5-inches in the triple jump Saturday, good for fifth place at nationals and All-American Honors.

Lila Cardillo PO ’22 became the first P-P female runner to earn All-American honors in track and field and cross country in her first year of competing, placing eighth in the 10,000.

Helen Guo PO ’20, who was runner-up in the 5,000 last year at nationals, placed fifth this year, giving her another All-American honors. Lauren Hamilton PO ’20 took 17th place in the 10,000.

Seven members of the team won a collective nine All-West region honors from the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, the organization announced last week.

CMS men’s track and field

CMS’ Evan Hassman HM ’21 exceeded expectations at nationals, taking eighth place in the steeplechase and becoming an All-American. Miles Christensen HM ’22 finished 17th in the 5,000-meter race. The Stags won this year’s SCIAC Championships.

Fifteen of the team’s athletes won a combined 22 All-West Region selections from the USTFCCA, the second-highest total in the nation, according to CMS Athletics.

CMS men’s tennis

CMS men’s tennis (33-2, 7-0 SCIAC) fell 5-3 to Emory College (22-2) in the NCAA DIII Championships last week.

Nikolai Parodi CM ’20 and Julian Gordy CM ’19 scored the team a win in the doubles competition, while Nic Meister CM ’22 and Jack Katzman CM ’21 pulled through two more victories for CMS in singles. Katzman ended his season undefeated in singles.

Five of the team’s six singles players will return next year.

CMS women’s golf

The CMS women’s golf team finished in fourth place at nationals with a 1233, one shot behind third-place Methodist College two weeks ago. Amy Xue CM ’22 and Kelly Ransom CM ’19 had strong performances in their final rounds on the fourth day of the tournament. Xue led the Athenas with an even-par 72, and Ransom shot a 74.

CMS men’s golf

The Stags finished eighth in the men’s golf championships. Sophomore Mason Chiu CM ’21 was the team’s top individual player for the tournament overall, finishing in 11th place with a 295. Austin Long CM ’20 had the best final round Friday with an even-par 72.

CMS women’s lacrosse

The Athena lacrosse team (16-3, 10-0 SCIAC) fell 14-8 to 12th-ranked Amherst College in the second round of the NCAA Division III tournament earlier this month. The two teams stayed nearly neck-and-neck for the first half of the game — neither leading by more than a goal. But Amherst pulled ahead in the second half with six straight goals beginning with 18:32 remaining, followed by another three straight goals in the final 10 minutes.

Corie Hack CM ’19 scored two goals in the game, bringing her career total to 213, the second-highest in CMS history.
