Search Narrows For Campus Safety Director

The Claremont University Consortium (CUC) has narrowed its search
for a new Director of Campus Safety to three final candidates: James Miyashiro,
Jeff Young and Stan Skipworth. On March 9, 10 and 11, each candidate held an
open forum in which students and members of the community could pose questions to
the candidates.

The position of Director of Campus Safety has been vacant
since February 2014, when Shahram Ariane left to become the head of security
for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Dean Manship, CUC’s emergency preparedness planning manager, became the interim
director following Ariane’s departure. Skipworth has served as interim
director since Nov. 1, 2014.

Bonnie Clemens, secretary to the board of overseers and assistant to the Chief Executive Officer of CUC, said student
feedback from the forums would be taken into account.

“Campus Safety is one of the
critical student services that Claremont University Consortium provides for the
Claremont Colleges, and we value feedback from students who are able to attend the
forums,” Clemens wrote in an email to TSL.

The committee to select the new director is comprised of 11 members who represent most of the seven colleges in the CUC.

Thomas Schalke CM ’18, who attended the open forum, expressed
concern about the relationship between Campus Safety and Claremont students.

“My biggest concern is that they respect the
student body and that they act in a manner towards the students that does not
demean them, but that still manages to get the job done,” Schalke said.
“They’re not here to enforce order; they’re here to protect us, to keep us
safe. It’s a much more relaxed job than I think is happening.”

The candidates for the Director of Campus Safety job come
from different universities in the Southwest. James Miyashiro is Chief of Police at the
University of New Mexico and Jeff Young is Assistant Chief of Police at the University of
California, Los Angeles.

Skipworth is currently the interim director of Campus Safety
for CUC. In his last job, he was Senior Director of Campus Safety and Transportation at the University of La Verne.
