CMC Plans to Replace Gym

Claremont McKenna College alumnus George R. Roberts CM ’66 recently donated an unrestricted $50 million gift to his alma mater, enough money for CMC to reach President Pamela Gann’s $600 million fundraising goal and give the Board of Trustees the funding to replace Ducey Gymnasium.

However, the construction plans for this massive undertaking are still unknown. In an e-mail to TSL, Gann wrote that the college is working with an architectural firm and design plans will be unveiled once they are finalized.

“We are hoping to break ground in 2014. The construction should take at least two years,” Gann wrote.

Despite the long time frame, Henry Appel CM ’15 still thinks the construction is a good decision.

“It’s about time.” Appel said. “Ducey has been going downhill for a long time now.”

Other students have a more critical view of the plan.

“I think it’s a misuse of funding,” Kevin McNamara CM ’15 said. “There are more serious issues that should be addressed first, such as the deteriorating dorm halls.”
