Chai Feldblum Joins Obama Administration

The sister of Pomona College’s Dean of Students is making history by joining the ranks of the Obama administration.

In September of last year, President Barack Obama nominated Chai Feldblum, sister of Vice President and Dean of Students Miriam Feldblum, to a position on the five-person Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, a federal agency that fields complaints of employment discrimination.

Obama announced he would bypass the senate and install 15 appointees on Saturday. Feldblum, a Georgetown University law professor who advocates on gay rights issues, was named to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

Feldblum is an active gay rights advocate and will be the first openly gay commissioner. She was the co-director of Workplace Flexibility 2010, a Georgetown Law workers’ rights campaign. She has also founded the Federal Legislation Clinic at Georgetown, helped write the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, worked as a law clerk for U.S. Supreme Court Justice Harry Blackmun, and is a disability rights activist.
