The
5C Energy Service Corps will hold “Lights Off For Love,”an electricity-free concert to increase awareness of energy consumption
and to promote efficient energy use, at the Motley Coffeehouse from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m tonight. Acoustic groups will be performing at the
candlelit event.
The 5C
Energy Service Corps has already held two similar “blackout concerts” at the Grove House. Because Lights Off For Love is expected to be a larger event, the Corps moved the venue to the
Motley and hopes to hold promotional concerts on each college’s campus.
The events
are designed to be alternatives to other nightlife activities that consume more
energy, such as using electronics in residence hall rooms or attending a well-lit, DJ-ed
party with bumping speakers.
The 5C
Energy Service Corps is a chapter of CALPIRG Energy Service Corps. CALPIRG, a non-governmental organization and
partner of AmeriCorps, works to educate and increase awareness of energy efficiency in communities. The group also
benefits communities by completing service projects and planning events that
increase energy efficiency for homeowners, public officials and small
businesses.
The 5C
Energy Service Corps is currently working on an project to produce educational videos for a
program that teaches kindergarten through 12th grade students. The first videos of the series feature an Energy Superhero who catches
energy-wasting perpetrators and teaches them his energy-efficient ways, all
while jetting around on his solar-powered skateboard.
The Corps is seeking students who
are interested in acting in the
films as well as assisting with production. The first filming will take place at 3 p.m. today. Participants will meet at the Grove House.
Just last week, volunteers associated with the 5C Energy Service Corps weatherized the
Pomona YMCA facility. This process included changing the light bulbs to compact
fluorescent bulbs, caulking the windows and weatherstripping doors. The changes increased the energy efficiency
of the facility and will save the organization money on heating and air
conditioning expenses.
Energy Education Week also took
place from Feb. 13 to Feb. 17. The Claremont Colleges chapter of CALPIRG set
a goal to educate 500 of the Inland Empire’s K-12 students. The Energy Service Corps reached out to
schools and community groups in the Claremont, Upland and Inland Empire school
districts in order to meet their goal.
