This November, the CCLA and Scripps Live Arts Committees, along with KSPC, are sponsoring “Music Month on the 5Cs,” a series of concerts across the Claremont Colleges occurring weekly until Thanksgiving Break. Along with free admission and a fairly awesome lineup of both independent and student musicians, promises of free food and drinks at each show make “Music Month” an especially attractive event.
KSPC’s Blowout Concert Featuring High Places and Moon Pearl kicked off “Music Month” last night. If you missed the lo-fi experimental pop of Moon Pearl and the intricate electronica of High Places, don’t worry: the month promises many more opportunities for good listening. Look below for a list of upcoming concerts, along with a little information about why each show is a must-go.
Concert: “Tennis, Kisses & Beer”
When: Friday, Nov. 12, 7:30 – 10 p.m.
Where: Walker Lounge (Pomona College)
What: No, this is not an instructional mantra for how to date Roger Federer. This CCLA-sponsored event brings in two buzz-worthy indie acts, the Denver-based Tennis and Los Angeles’ Kisses. Following on the synth-based 80s revivalism of contemporaries such as Twin Shadow, Diamond Rings, and even Cut Copy, Kisses sounds like a necessarily stripped-down Tears For Fears, using “new wave” electronics to create a sunny yet wistful sound. Tennis’ husband-and-wife duo feeds off of the same breezy energy, but prefers to strip down its nostalgic sound in an effort to ride the wave of fellow lo-fi surf poppers like Girls, Best Coast, and Wild Nothing.
Concert: Live Music and Painting Party Featuring Nora and the Brights and Ryan Wieghard and the Abstract Truth
When: Friday, Nov. 12, 9:30 – 11:30 p.m.
Where: The Motley Coffeehouse (Scripps College)
What: Starting just as “Tennis, Kisses & Beer” ends, this Scripps Live Arts party promises “lots of paint,” “cardboard,” and “bodies,” along with two student bands: the ubiquitous Nora and the Brights, the surf-pop foursome fresh off its first two gigs, as well as jazz guitarist Ryan Wieghard and the Abstract Truth.
Concert: Ami Yares with Kitchen Hips
When: Thursday, Nov. 18, 9 – 11 p.m.
Where: The Motley Coffeehouse (Scripps College)
What: Ami Yares, a New Jersey-born Israeli singer-songwriter, brings his heady, Rufus Wainwright-style acoustic folk to the Motley. Opening for Yares, with her own brand of banjo-driven roots music, is Pomona’s own Aerienne Russell, who plays under the moniker “Kitchen Hips.”
Concert: The Thermals with White Fang
When: Saturday, Nov. 20, 9 – 11 p.m.
Where: Edmunds Ballroom (Pomona College)
What: Touring together on a small run of the West Coast, The Thermals and White Fang bring the punk sounds of their hometown, Portland, to Pomona’s campus. Dealing in chaotic, bizarrely fun noise-rock, White Fang typically features a multitude of musically-inclined hooligans tearing and thrashing through their instruments on stage, surely a sight to behold. The Thermals, legends of the Portland indie world and beyond, hardly need any introduction. Signed to the legendary Sub Pop Records, the no-frills rock trio comprised of Hutch Harris, Kathy Foster, and Westin Glass have been recording and playing infamously inspired live shows for almost a decade now. Their third album, The Body, the Blood, the Machine, remains one of the most critically lauded albums of 2006, and the ensuing success of the record heralded The Thermals as one of the most promising indie punk bands of the new millennium.
