Pomona College’s Frary Dining Hall will open for lunch half an hour later next semester, a school official announced Thursday.

Frary is currently open for lunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday. In spring 2020, it will open at 11:30 a.m. and remain open until 2 p.m, according to Pomona assistant vice president of facilities Robert Robinson.

The school found that the short amount of time between the end of breakfast service at 10 a.m. and the beginning of lunch at 11 a.m. “has placed significant strain on staff,” he said via email.

Additionally, on average, only “8 to 12 students” per day had been taking advantage of the early lunch opening, he said.

The change alters a pilot project that lengthened Frary’s lunch hours to its current iteration. The expansion was meant to alleviate congestion during the busiest periods of the lunch rush.

Collins Dining Hall at Claremont McKenna College will become the only dining hall open for lunch at 11 a.m.
