Saturday was a good day to be a Claremont-Mudd-Scripps athlete.
The CMS women’s cross-country team made history on Saturday morning, winning their 10th straight SCIAC Championship, and the CMS men’s cross-country team edged out Pomona-Pitzer in a tiebreaker to claim the title.
Despite first and second place individual finishes by P-P, the Athenas’ had five runners in the top 10 that propelled them to victory. P-P took second place.
Lila Cardillo PO ’22 was the individual champion, finishing with a time of 21:40 in the women’s 6,000-meter race, followed by Helen Guo PO ’20 10 seconds later. The Athenas’ Riley Harmon SC ’22 took third, with teammates coming in seventh, eight, ninth and 10th place.
The men’s competition, on the other hand, went down to the wire.
After CMS’ and P-P’s first five runners’ both scored a total of 31 points, their places were then compared in a head-to-head matchup. Because CMS’ first, fourth and fifth place runners came in ahead of P-P’s, they were awarded the title of SCIAC champions.
Thomas D’Anieri CM ’20 was the individual champion, finishing with a time of 24:52 in the 8,000-meter race. Ethan Widlansky PO ’22 followed close behind and came in 24:55.5 to secure second place.
Both CMS and P-P will compete once again at Pomona College’s Wash on Nov. 16 in the Division III West Regional Championship. The men’s race will begin at 9:00 a.m. and the women’s race will begin at 10:00 a.m.
