Claremont McKenna College’s chief civil rights officer is investigating reported actions by members of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps swim and dive team, a college spokesperson said Wednesday.
Nyree Gray, the assistant vice president of diversity and chief civil rights officer, is “overseeing an investigation of reported actions by CMS swimming and diving team members,” CMC spokesperson Gilien Silsby said in an email to TSL.
Team members could face consequences if they’re found to have violated the values of CMS athletics and its associated colleges.
CMS is “committed to maintaining an environment in which every community member feels welcomed and valued,” Silsby said. “Conduct inconsistent with those values will not be tolerated. Furthermore, the colleges may mandate remedies if students are found to have acted in a manner contradictory to the values of CMS Athletics and their college.”
A source close to the team said Wednesday that team members received an email from the Title IX office several weeks ago that an investigation was commencing. Several senior women on the team recently quit, according to the source, who spoke to TSL on the condition of anonymity.
The swim and dive team has begun practicing for the season with its first competition slated for Oct. 26 at UC San Diego.
