Claremont Graduate University withdrew from the International Place of the Claremont Colleges — a once-7C resource center for international students — over the summer, officials said.
The decision came after a CGU evaluation of student engagement with I-Place which “determined that critical services for international students are best suited to be fully housed within CGU’s Student Life, Diversity & Leadership Office (SLDL),” according to an email the CGU Dean of Students office sent to CGU students in July.
Beginning spring 2020, SLDL will expand to include “enhanced services that focuses on providing targeted programming that best serves our students’ needs and interests,” the email said.
Ariel Carpenter, CGU director of Student Life & International Services, did not immediately respond to a request for additional information about the school’s withdrawal from I-Place.
I-Place Interim Director Chrystal Orozco declined to comment.
It’s unclear if I-Place programming — such as its New International Student and Scholar Orientation (NISSO) and the Community Friends of International Students (CFIS) grant program — will remain available to CGU students.
It’s also unknown how much CGU previously contributed to I-Place, or if any of these contributions will continue.
The change is a further blow to I-Place after Harvey Mudd College pulled out of the center in December 2018, taking with it its $40,000 contribution. HMC now runs its own international student orientation and handles paperwork for its international students.
