Women’s Lacrosse: Athenas Smack Sagehens, Repeat As SCIAC Champions
The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women’s lacrosse team (18-1, 10-0 SCIAC) completed their SCIAC season in dominant fashion Saturday, defeating archrival Pomona-Pitzer (11-8, 5-5 SCIAC) 17-5 in the conference championship. With the win, CMS extended their 18-game winning streak, dating back to their season opener Feb. 18.
The Athenas jumped to an 11-0 lead in the first half and never looked back, dominating the Sagehens from the opening whistle. Hannah Graves CM ’20 led CMS in scoring, tallying five of those 11 first half goals.
CMS will be heading to Colorado Springs to start the NCAA Division III Tournament, where they will take on Colorado College (14-4) for the second consecutive season.
Men’s Tennis: Stags Take Down P-P For 13th Straight SCIAC Title
The Stag tennis team (28-3, 9-0 SCIAC) extended their incredible 13-year SCIAC unbeaten streak Saturday, defeating Pomona-Pitzer (16-9, 6-2 SCIAC) 5-1 to win the SCIAC Championship.
Julian Gordy CM ’19 and Nikolai Parodi CM ’20 took home an 8-6 win at No.1 singles, while Robert Liu CM ’21 and Daniel Park CM ’20 won 8-3 at No. 3 to give CMS a 2-1 advantage heading to singles.
The Stags then got the three singles wins they needed to win the championship, as Oscar Burney CM ’20, Gordy and Avinash Vemuri CM ’19 made quick work of their opponents, winning 6-1, 7-6(5), 6-2, 6-3 and 6-3, 6-3, respectively.
CMS will look to keep rolling into the NCAA Tournament, which they will be hosting at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.
Women’s Tennis: CMS Sweeps P-P In Convincing Conference Championship Victory
The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women’s tennis team (24-2, 7-0 SCIAC) continued the Sixth Street onslaught Saturday, taking the SCIAC Championship 5-0 over Pomona-Pitzer (14-7, 6-1 SCIAC).
Doubles teams of Catherine Allen SC ’20 and Caroline Cox CM ’21, Kyla Scott HM ’18 and Juliette Martin HM ’20, and Lindsay Brown CM ’18 and Nicole Tan CM ’20 quickly swept through their Sagehen opponents, giving the Athenas a 3-0 lead.
Tan then earned the first singles point with a 6-3, 6-1 victory, and Rebecca Berger CM ’21 clinched the title with another 6-3, 6-1 win.
CMS is ranked No. 3 nationally and will enter the NCAA Tournament with hopes of taking the championship.
Softball: Tournament MVP Gurr Carries Athenas To SCIAC Title
Behind an amazing weekend of performances from star senior Anna Gurr CM ’18, the Athena softball team (31-12, 17-11 SCIAC) won the double-elimination SCIAC tournament, earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Gurr, the tournament MVP, didn’t allow an earned run in 21 innings across three victories Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, single-handedly carrying the Athenas to their fifth SCIAC title in program history.
The Athenas beat Pomona-Pitzer (27-16, 17-11 SCIAC) 2-1 Saturday, despite the fact they had fallen in three of four matchups to their rivals in the regular season.
Gurr capped the weekend off with her 30th career shutout in a 2-0 win over defending champ La Verne (28-16, 21-7 SCIAC) Sunday. CMS’ only run support came in the first inning, with RBI singles by Brianna Halle CM ’18 and Kawai Scanlan SC ’21.
