CMS Lacrosse Nets Win Against Redlands

Katie Hill CM '18 squares off against the University of Redlands Bulldogs on Feb. 21 at John Zinda Field.

After two nail-biting wins over University of Redlands last year, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women’s lacrosse team (1-0, 1-0 SCIACs) blasted past the Bulldogs in their season opener on Tuesday, Feb. 21. The Athenas triumphed over the Bulldogs (0-1, 0-1 SCIACs) 13-3, upping their average of 12 goals per game last season. The Athenas, who hosted the Bulldogs in Claremont, displayed a dominant offensive performance and kept Redlands’ scoring opportunities to a minimum.

Corie Hack CM ’19 had a standout night, scoring four times throughout the match. A hat trick from Allie Hill CM ’20 and two goals from Sally Carlson CM ’20 also lifted the Athenas’ offense. In total, the Athenas took 31 shots, compared to the Bulldogs’ 12.

The Athenas immediately got the ball rolling with five consecutive goals early in the first half. Hack, who was SCIAC Newcomer of the Year in lacrosse and CMS Freshman Athlete of the Year in 2016, started the Athenas off with the first goal of the night in the first three minutes off of a free position shot. Less than 30 seconds later, Mikaela Connell CM ’18 followed with a goal of her own to put the Athenas up 2-0.

Allie Hill shortly followed up the Athenas’ quick start with two consecutive goals within a minute of each other. An assist from Connell to Hannah Graves CM ’20 put the Athenas up 5-0 with just 10 minutes to play in the first half. Despite a shot from Hanna Morford to put the Bulldogs on the board, Hack quickly responded with her second goal, closing the half out at 6-1 CMS.

Just when CMS’s offense couldn’t get any hotter, they upped the ante in the second half, racking up seven more goals. Within the first 30 seconds, Carlson assisted Hack for another goal, bumping the Athenas’ lead up 7-1. Five minutes later, CMS scored three times in less than two minutes with shots from Hack, Hill, and Cara Cancelmo CM ’17. Cohen added another goal in the thirteenth minute, extending the lead to a decisive 11-1.

Although an assist from Hanna Morford to Sadie Pickering gave Redlands their second goal, Carlson immediately responded by scoring CMS’s final two goals. Although Morford landed a shot with four minutes remaining, CMS was too far ahead for the Bulldogs to catch up. The game ended in a decisive 13-3 win for the Athenas.

In addition to the offense’s exceptional night, CMS’ defense also had a strong showing. In her first official game as an Athena, goalie Sara Reid CM ’20 played a crucial role in the victory with six saves out of nine shots on goal. After a dominant 2016 regular season record (13-4) and an appearance in the semifinal round of the SCIAC tournament, CMS’s performance shows strong promise for an exciting and successful new season. Next up, the Athenas will face their Claremont rivals, the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens, on Saturday, Feb. 25, at 7 p.m.
