CMS Men's Golf Scores Second, Sagehens Claim Seventh Place

This past weekend marked another exciting golf tournament for the Claremont Colleges as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Pomona-Pitzer men’s teams competed in the SCIAC II Tournament at Anaheim Hills Golf Club. Held Saturday and Sunday, Apr. 9 and 10, the teams went head-to-head against SCIAC competitors California Lutheran Univeristy, University of La Verne, University of Redlands, Chapman University, and Occidental College. Cal Lutheran emerged victorious with an overall +23 score (with a total of 583). Although Cal Lutheran came out on top, CMS followed closely in second, marking +27 (and a total of 587), just four shots behind Cal Lutheran. P-P finished in seventh with +40 and a total score of 600 for the weekend.

After the first SCIAC tournament at Tukwet Canyon Golf Course in early February, the Stags and Sagehens were ready to square off once again. In the first SCIAC meet, the Stags took home a first-place finish, as Jonathan Shaw CM ’18 dominated with a +4 performance.

With 44 golfers representing their schools in the tournament, five Stags placed in the top 20. An impressive outing from Jackson Zepf CM ’18 who shot +7 and had 147 total strokes, helped the Stags secure their second-place rank. This was Zepf’s highest finish of the season, and Alex Wrenn CM ’19 (+8, 148 total) helped CMS secure a second-place finish behind Cal Lutheran, shooting just one shot below Zepf. Wrenn’s finish earned him a tie for twelfth for the weekend, and Shaw tied for seventeenth, shooting a +10 (150 total).

Pomona-Pitzer also came out swinging: Three Sagehens had top-20 performances, with eighth, twelfth, and seventeenth-place finishes. Pomona-Pitzer Sagehen Kevin Knox PO ’16 held the highest score for P-P (+7, 147 total), and split the eighth-place rank with Zepf. Gilbert Clang PO ’19 finished with just one stroke over Knox (+8, 148), and tied for twelfth place with Wrenn.

This tournament, which prominently featured CMS and P-P’s conference competitors, was just a preview of the SCIAC Championships, which will take place from Apr. 24-26 at the Oak Valley Golf Club in Beaumont, Calif. While CMS will take this weekend off to prepare for the match, the Sagehens will host Occidental Sunday, Apr. 17, in their last series before the most anticipated tournament of the season.
