Claremont Rugby Advances to Second Round

Throughout the 2016 season, the Claremont Colleges Rugby Football Club (8-0) has maintained an impeccable record, scorching their competition consistently.  Following their league championship against Azusa Pacific University on Friday, Mar. 4, Claremont received the top seed in the Division II National Small College Rugby Organization (NSCRO) championship playoffs. After winning the title last season, the team is looking for another championship. In the first round of playoffs, Claremont took down No. 4-ranked Loyola Marymount University in a stunning 53-6 victory on Saturday, Mar. 19. With this decisive victory, Claremont proved it has little room for improvement, dominating the Lions with critical defensive performances from Nick Lanker PO '17 and Gator Adams CM '17. Additionally, Bobby Chui CM '18 provided great kicking for Claremont while Grant Frazier PO '16 contributed to the team's offense, scoring three times throughout the match.

Though they’re eager for the title, the Claremont players have a long road to the title. With this win, the team will advance to the second round in the NSCRO’s Pacific Coast Cup playoffs, facing No. 2 seed Azusa Pacific on Saturday, Apr. 2. After defeating No. 3-ranked California Lutheran University 41-36 last weekend, Azusa Pacific is looking to take down Claremont in an epic rematch. If they advance, Claremont will next compete in the National Round of 16 (Apr. 16), followed by the National Round of Eight (Apr. 17), the National Final Four (Apr. 29), and finally, the National Championship, (May 1).  With their perfect season, the odds are in Claremont’s favor to continue their win streak and repeat defend their national title.
