The runway came to Claremont on Saturday, April 23rd at “Off the Grid: A Fashion Show.” Held at Scripps College's Margaret Fowler Garden, the event sought to promote body positivity, artistic expression, and self-love by women, for women.
Featuring the innovative designs of Sara Gomez PO '18, fourteen women from Pomona College modeled pieces from Gomez’s spring/summer 2016 collection. The mostly black-and-white statement clothing was complemented by soft pastel colors, and the pieces were met with much appreciation.
The event also showcased the artistic achievements of several other students. Interracial Leisureware, a local clothing collection by Sara Gonzalez-Bautista SC ‘18, made a statement with its clothing pieces, meant to undermine racial stigma often found in fashion. Additionally, designs by Senqué LP PO ‘19 and artwork by Rae'Quan Nelson PO ‘19 made an appearance at the show.
Following the fashion show, some of the outfits were made available for sale, making the unique clothing pieces available to everyone.
By challenging traditional notions of beauty, “Off the Grid,” true to its name, demonstrated that being trendy doesn’t have to come from purchasing standard fashion from brand names or department stores. Rather, beauty can be found in the most unconventional of places—but most importantly, in ourselves.
